Jack Catterall : Un Retour sur la Scène du Junior-Welterweight
Jack Catterall, boxeur de 31 ans, a récemment exprimé sa détermination à revenir au sommet de la catégorie junior-welterweight après une analyse réfléchie de sa défaite controversée face à Arnold Barboza Jnr. Lors de leur affrontement en février à Manchester, Catterall a subi un revers que certains observateurs considèrent comme sa première défaite, en raison de la controverse entourant sa première rencontre avec Josh Taylor en 2022.
Barboza Jnr, qui a remporté ce combat, s’est vu offrir une opportunité contre le champion WBO, Teofimo Lopez, prévue pour le 2 mai à New York. En parallèle, Catterall se prépare à redémarrer sa carrière cet été. Son promoteur, Eddie Hearn, a aussi évoqué des affrontements potentiels avec le champion IBF Richardson Hitchins, ou avec des boxeurs comme George Kambosos Jnr, vainqueur de Jake Wyllie, et Dalton Smith. Toutefois, il reste à déterminer qui sera le prochain adversaire de Catterall.
L’ancien challenger au titre s’est exprimé sur sa préparation : « Gotta draw a line underneath it, assess it, which I’ve been doing over the last couple of weeks. Spoke with Jamie [Moore, my trainer]; spoke with Sam [Jones, my manager] and Nigel [Travis, my assistant trainer]. It’s time to improve and be better, ’cause I am better than that. » Il a précisé qu’il n’a pas l’intention de faire de grands changements, mais qu’il vise à apporter des améliorations sur des détails cruciaux.
Catterall a analysé les circonstances de sa défaite, soulignant qu’il n’y avait pas une grande différence entre les deux boxeurs : « I didn’t think there were loads in the fight. I knew he were a good fighter. You don’t make it to mandatory position, 31 fights undefeated, for being a shit fighter. We knew he were good. It just wasn’t my night. »
Déterminé à revenir plus fort, il a déclaré : « I’m back in the gym now, and looking to be back in the summer time. That’s something Sam and Eddie have spoke about, and there’s a couple of different options. It’s about preparing now and making them adjustments and little one per cents and being the best I can for a summer date. »
Concernant Teofimo Lopez, Catterall pense que Barboza Jnr est capable de l’affronter après sa victoire : « Yeah, I do. At that level now, he’s certainly up there. You look at Lopez’s last couple of performances; the [in June 2024, Steve] Claggett fight, he’s not been looking a million dollars. I wish Barboza all the best in the fight and hope he can go on and do it. »
Catterall, toujours en quête de rattraper le peloton de tête, a affirmé : « I’m ready for all of them. I want to fight all the fighters. I understand after a loss you take a step back in the pecking order, but all the top names at 140, I’m open to fighting all of them. Maybe not the next fight; maybe the fight after that. But there’s a lot of good fighters in and around 140; there’s so many to name; I want any of them. We want to target the world champions, but that aside, you’ve got a big handful of fighters that are fringe level as well, so there’s a lot of competition. »
Fier de son parcours, Catterall a pris le temps de réfléchir à sa défaite : « I’m excited to be back. I’ve taken time to reflect on the defeat, and I’m disappointed in myself and the performance. I’m down but I’m not out. There’s a lot of good fights and I’m back on the hunt. »
Avec une détermination renouvelée, Catterall aspire à faire entendre de nouveau son nom dans la division, prêt à affronter les meilleurs et à gravir les échelons vers le titre.
